Away

What did you see when you were away?
Different visions from those
You left behind?
Scenes shaped
By what your dreams foretold
And molded into dreams-come-true?
For your sake, I wish it were so.
But I suspect that what you saw
Was just an illusion
Or that the veil of time has clouded it
And has no place in the here-and-now.
Yet, still it gave you comfort.
I could tell by the look in your eyes
And I let it go.
What do you see when you are away?
Is it a perfect, mirrored reflection?
Or that of a fractured glass before you?
You do not see the way I see
And I cannot see through your eyes.
You become a mystery to me
When you are away
And I cannot find you.
I need you to call out,
Let me know where you are.
Give me a sign.
Make your new-self known.
To me you seem lost and afraid.
I can tell by the tone of your voice
And I let it go.
What will you see when you are away?
Things shaped by wishes
And things that might-have-been?
Or things more here-and-now?
I cannot foresee the angels
Nor the demons you will face.
I know the ones that await me
But I fear more for the ones
That lie ahead for you.
While one of us may wander
While the other is far away,
The only hope I have
Is that our paths may cross again
And that your hope
Is the same as mine.
And if it indeed they do cross
I will know by the set of your stance.
If you are away I will know
By the look in your eyes,
By the tone of your voice,
By the set of your stance.
If there is a chance you may return
Then I will not let it go.
