Foley

I am just a foley artist

Adding biting sound effects

To this show of monosyllables,

A simulated slap or fading step

To signify a phrase or joke or witticism

That I can see within the lines

Of a scene being played

On another stage.

Never seen but merely heard

When the script seems weak

Or the dialogue appears banal,

I interject an effect to make a point

Or add a punch

To a failing punchline.

I stand at the ready

To add a word or two.

Unsung and unappreciated

I serve to add zest

To a bland salad of romain

That just seems to be

More and more of the same,

A background of sparks

To a foreground of noise

That goes on and on and on.

I stand one or two steps

Ahead of the script

In anticipation of the moment

When my talents can be

Brought to the fore and used,

But relegated to just a line

In the credits.

Often criticized by those

Who do not appreciate

My interjections,

Obscure as they may seem to others

And thus too gauche

To be considered germane

To the present conversation.

I am just a pair of coconuts

Galloping on behind the King,

A misunderstood adjunct

To the dullness of everyday life.
