Janus

Janus

Look how young we were,

So confidently flamboyant

In our beads and feathers

And coloured glasses,

Impossible visions in our heads

And a world of temptation in easy reach.

An exotic table spread with promise

And extravagant confidence

Lay before us,

A cornucopia of delight and danger.

Gleefully destroying our ears

While feasting our eyes

And spinning our minds

With dangerous potions.

Many did not long survive.

Who could foresee the peril?

Who could resist the temptation?

Those days shaped us, molded us

Into these rusting, aged hippies

Coming home to roost.

And feeding on fading dreams.

But some, with wits still about them

Remember the halcyon days.

What we thought was sunrise

Was just the setting of a fanciful dream

At the ending of the day.

But it lingers on in that distant dream,

And still, at times, sustains me

Through darkened times

And shadows I could not foresee.

Do with me what you will.

I’m in your capricious hands.

But I remember still

And I am haunted

With might-have-beens.
