A Traveller

A Traveller

Let me travel this road with dignity

And reach my destination intact.

Bruised? Battered? Scarred?

I wear the marks of a traveller

Who wandered from the path,

But not so far that I could not return.

There are wounds I cannot identify

And pains arise unbidden.

Scars appear from battles fought

Whose cause and resolution

I cannot recall.

At times, my destination fades

And my goals become unclear.

My values are what sustain me.

I know that if I follow

This path that I have chosen

And return to it when I stray,

That home lies beyond that hill,

That hill on the far horizon

Where I am duty bound to go.
