Turned Away

Turned Away

I might have turned away,

Turned my face to other things

That caught my fancy more than you.

I might have gone about my day

In perfect, peaceful ignorance

Of what you held in store

And spared myself the grief

Of losing you.

With honey’d words and nectar’d kisses

You called and I, the fool, replied

Caught up in a moment’s madness

And bound upon the fool’s errand,

That lay ahead.

I surrendered before I truly began

And thereby sealed my fate.

I should have turned away.
