Palimpsest

Sailed

The horizon is so wide, 

Wider than I could ever have imagined

Stretching from fingertip to fingertip 

With arms outstretched

And so many ships have

Dared the dragons

Then sailed over the edge. 

I cannot catch them all.

I tried but I failed. 

Now, those that lie within my reach 

Serve only to recall those foolish years. 

They point to ships having already sailed 

And vanished beyond my reach. 

Had I known it was this important 

I would have begun

Many years ago.
