A Time That Was
I weep for a time that was,
Perhaps because I will never see it again.
I see it now with different eyes,
Eyes dimmed but still discerning,
Eyes with refined ability and yet
Things crumble to dust,
Then vanish beyond my event horizon
And go somewhere else.
Things that were near just yesterday
Continue to expand beyond my reach.
Things that were far just yesterday
Have slipped away
And are gone forever.
For all the times that ever were
It seems I cannot catch up
And this time is growing short.
It slips through my hands,
Like money through a gambler’s hands,
Like drugs through an addict’s hands,
Like sand through a child’s hands
Like memories through a senior’s hands
And is gone forever
Beyond my horizon
Unless I record it.
