The Meaning Of Meaning
How to give a rock meaning?
It has to be the right rock
One that fits neatly in my hand,
Oval in shape and smooth to the touch
Why this one out of uncounted number
That are spred beneath my feet?
Because I chose it.
One that you imbue/invest with a part of yourself
But I am about to do something amazing,
A trick worthy of a modern Mandrake.
I am about to give it meaning.
A rock has no meaning
Until it falls under my gaze,
Until I invest a measure of myself
Into this inanimate thing.
It may be a treasured memory
That has become burdensome,
So I wonβt throw it very far.
I may want to retrieve it.
It may be a token of love
Or an omen of hate
Or simply a song playing in my head.
It has meaning for me at that moment.
The beauty is
That I can lay whatever I want
On that stone.
I can throw it near or
I can throw it far.
But wherever it lands
It carries the meaning I gave it.
If I can convey a measure of
That meaning to you
By showing you this rock,
It has been a good day.
