Appropriation

APPROPRIATION

How discouraging it is

To stumble on your latest piece,

An idea you thought was yours, unique,

The perfect bon mot, the crowning touch

Was nothing but the purloined work of another.

What can I say that has not been said before?

If I, in my arrogance, place two letters together,

What guarantee is there

That this has not been done before?

The same, yet different.

You and I both see a bird.

You see swallow and I see crow

Yet all are in agreement

That it is a bird.

I can only plead my innocence that

Perhaps my meaning and intent were different.

We both saw a bird.

It’s All a case of Convergent Evolution.

Innocent, but still;

The ghost of plagiarism hangs heavy

With admonition.
