Stones

Stones

Stones laid one before the other

According to my plan.

A plan, not drawn in indigo and white,

Marches on in halting steps

Towards a goal that I design,

The line, straight as I am able,

True as my eye can see.

Stones laid one on one

Climbing up to heaven

Aspiring, perhaps, to Grace

Touching the hems of angels and saints.

Row upon row, each nestled secure

On the shoulders of others.

No less an ambition

Than the architects of Babel.

Stones in precise sequence,

Step One , then Step Two.

Part A fits into Part B.

It’s all so simple

When you follow the plan.

Church? Temple? A bastion of Man’s pride?

A hovel, or a hut?

It’s all the same to me.

It’s only a wall,

One stone before the other,

One stone atop the other,

Stretching out

Reaching up

According to my plan.

Stones as words
