If You Should

If you should happen to pass me by

And hear me gently sigh,

Then stop and ask me, Why?

If you did by chance take note

Of a quiet tear upon my cheek,

Then pause and ask me, Why?

If you should see my shoulders slumped

As though bearing a great weight,

Then come and ask me, Why?

If you should spot me all alone

In need of a companion,

Then approach and ask me, Why?

If you should notice me lost

Wandering uncertain of direction,

Then take my hand and ask me, Why?

If you would do these simple things for me

Would you not do them for a stranger

Without asking, Why?
