Dodging A Bullet

The family standing around me
Must have thought I’d snuffed it
Like the stiff and comatose Norwegian Blue.
The room spun like a child’s top.
I dropped like a brick
Bouncing my head like a leaden balloon
From the hardwood.
I’m told that I spoke during my time on the floor,
But I have no recollection.
Some time later there were EMS attendants
Preparing me for transport to the hospital.
No real harm.
Hard head.
I dodged a bullet that day
Not by skill or conscious intent,
But by sheer and utter luck.
