Empty Gazes
Do visions unfold in that vacant stare?
Does the world of long ago,
(playing out on a slowly receding screen
that masks your failing grip
on a tenuous reality
and the indignities imposed by many years),
Hide behind those shuttered eyes?
Do you roam the halls of golden palaces
Or cower in dungeons, shackled by despair?
You give no outward sign by day.
Only at night do you cry out,
Your fears come to haunt your dreams
Then vanish with the dawn
Leaving no trace,
Save the look in your empty gaze.
I cannot know your dreams
But I fear them.
