Symbols
Not to overstate the obvious,
But symbols are representations
Of something else.
We imbue symbols with
A tangled web of meaning.
Cross, Swastika,Yellow Star, Quran.
Symbols are a kind of shorthand
That can declare many things at once,
A belief, a worldview, a moral stand.
There is danger in adopting symbols
Without understanding their wider meaning.
Symbols can become an excuse for
Not thinking critically.
If you do not understand the significance of your symbol,
Then you should be reluctant to adopt it
Or display it.
From the Easter Bunny to the Pieta,
You must try to understand
The meaning and significance
Of the symbols that you adopt.
Symbols, without thought,
Can become a cudgel to beat apostates
Or anyone who disagrees.
