style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Fathers to sons, mothers to daughters <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>All the village bairns seated at their knee.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Hearken to tales that came from beyond the sea<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Hearken to stories that speak to me now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Sail back cross the ocean to hillside and home<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Over hills, by lochside and braes I would walk<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>As generations before trod among gorse and bracken,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Tasted the scent of heather and of foaming salty sea.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>They worked the mines, tilled the soil,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Fishers sailed from the docks to farm the endless seas,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Herders of sheep and drovers of cattle that fed their folk,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Neither reivers nor brigands<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>But simple folk, simple trades, simple fare were their lot<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Pledged to Family, Clan Church and Country.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Peat fires warmed the hearth, boiled the tea<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Brought to the pit head to fathers and sons<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Who laboured deep within the earth<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>To power the age of steam and industry,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Gathering when mine\u2019s whistle sounded disaster<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>To comfort the stricken and bereaved.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Simple dignity and pride were all they sought<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Held high with traditions steeped in ancient lore<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Passed hand to hand, mouth to mouth like those before.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>An unbroken river that ties this place,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Here and now, to that place there and then.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>From triumph at Stirling Bridge to tragedy at Culloden<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Of Wallace, Roy and the sad, sad Prince<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Told and retold to children\u2019s children\u2019s children<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Passing on that sense of pride and lasting grief<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>That haunt the great diaspora born of the clearances<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>And desire to live free of landlord and desperate povert<\/em>y<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Offering prayers to Seonaidh for a blessing on their crossing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>And so, deep in the dark when such things are possible,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Sailing from old Glasgow\u2019s soot-clad port<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Selkies rise from the sea to enchant<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>The unwary in gossamer nets of sweet promise<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>And will\u2019o-the-whisps and faeries dance about the fyre<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Like ancient Druids come to pay homage to ancient Gods<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Voices raised as pipers stretch out their piobaireachd.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>It stirs a thing in me to join them, <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>Calling out across the water,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em>\u201cCome home.
