Me And The Boy

Me and the boy
Walking side by side
Along the stoney river bank.
Not too far,
Not too close,
My heart says let him go.
He has to venture, must dare
Must wander further away
If he is ever
To wander anywhere.
How much of my experience
Do I dare impart
Before he shuts me out
And I get
“Hey, old man. I’ve heard it all before”.
So much more
I would tell you
To spare you the grief
That I have known.
